How well do you know your friends? A quiz to play together

To test how well you know your friends, pick one friend, have them answer a set of questions about themselves in secret, and have everyone else guess their answers. Score two points for each right guess and add them up. Questions about small habits work better than birthdays or middle names, because nobody can look them up.

Most "how well do you know me" quizzes ask the same few facts: favorite color, birthday, pet's name. Close friends get those right and learn nothing. The fun questions are the small ones you'd only know from spending time together: how they act at a scary movie, how many alarms they set, which seat they want on a road trip.

Below is a 20-question quiz you can use as it is, the rules for playing it with a group or just two of you, and a scoring system that rewards close guesses too.

Play it with your group

How do you play the quiz?

  1. Pick the friend the quiz is about. They answer all 20 questions privately, in a notes app or on paper, before anyone guesses.
  2. Everyone else writes down what they think that friend answered for each question.
  3. Go through the questions one by one. The friend reads out their real answer, and everyone checks their guess.
  4. Score two points for a right answer. For the two 1-to-10 questions, score two points for exactly right or one away, and one point for two away.
  5. Highest score knows them best. Next round, someone else is in the hot seat.

Other ways to play it

Hot seat in the group chat

Post one question a day about one friend instead of all 20 at once. They send their answer to whoever is hosting, everyone else replies with a guess, and the host reveals it in the evening. It turns a one-off quiz into a daily habit.

Head to head

Two friends each answer the quiz about themselves, then swap and guess each other's answers. Compare scores: did you know them better than they knew you?

Write a fake

For open questions like "What show do you rewatch over and over?", everyone writes a fake answer instead of guessing. Mix the fakes with the real one, and see who can pick it out.

Make it about you

Answer the 20 questions about yourself, then send them to friends one at a time and see who gets the most right. It's the classic "how well do you know me" quiz, with better questions.

Where does Deja Who fit?

Deja Who is this quiz, spread out over time. Every day your group gets one question about one friend; they answer privately, everyone else guesses, and the answer is revealed at the hour your group picks. It mixes multiple choice, ranking, 1-to-10 scales and write-a-fake questions, and scores close guesses the same way as above.

Points add up over a monthly season, and the game tracks who knows each friend best. It's free, needs no account, and plays from a link in your group chat. Two friends can play as a pair.

Turn these into a daily game

Deja Who asks your group one of these a day. One person answers, everyone else guesses or writes a fake answer to fool the others, and the reveal shows who knows you best. Free, in any phone browser, no app or account.

Questions people ask

How do you score a how well do you know me quiz?

Give two points for each right guess. For number or ranking questions, give partial credit for being close: two points for exact or one away on a 1-to-10 scale, one point for two away. The highest total knows that friend best.

How many questions should a friend quiz have?

Ten to twenty is plenty for one sitting. If you play it in a group chat, one question a day works better than a long list all at once.

Can you play a friend quiz online with friends far away?

Yes. Post the questions in your group chat and collect answers by direct message, or use Deja Who, which runs one question a day about one friend from a link and keeps score for you.

What questions should you avoid?

Skip anything about looks, weight, money, past relationships, religion or politics. The point is to laugh about small habits, not to put anyone on the spot.
